Meet the Guardians: Atagawa Lifesaving Club
The safety of our beach is guarded by the Atagawa Lifesaving Club (@atagawa.l.s.c). Their dedication goes far beyond the summer months. If you follow their journey on Instagram, you will see them training in the chilly waters of April and May, long before the first tourists arrive.
Once a month, lifesavers from across the region gather here for “Atagawa Umi-ren” (Ocean Training) to hone their rescue skills. Their motto is simple but powerful: “To protect this blue ocean and the smiles of those who visit.”

The Reality: The Power and Danger of the Pacific
While the ocean is undeniably beautiful, it is also a powerful force of nature. Atagawa faces the open sea, which means the waves can become high and powerful very quickly. Even on a seemingly calm day, strong rip currents can occur.
The local people know the risks of swimming in an unmonitored ocean. Entering the water when lifesavers are not on duty can be extremely dangerous. The reason our lifesavers train so intensely is to anticipate these split-second dangers that the untrained eye might miss. Their presence is what makes this “wild” beauty accessible to everyone.
