The Heartbeat of the Earth: The Steam of Atagawa
As you step off the train at Izu-Atagawa Station, you are immediately greeted by towering plumes of white steam rising into the sky. Scattered throughout the town are “Yagura”—wooden and steel towers that stand as monuments to the Earth’s energy. This is the identity of Atagawa Onsen.
But behind this serene view is a relentless battle with nature, led by the masters of heat known as the “Yumori” (Hot Spring Guardians).
“I Can Hear the Spring’s Mood”
In the quiet of the early morning, long before the first guest wakes, our Yumori listens to the rhythm of the towers.
Voice of the Yumori:
“Do you hear that rhythmic ‘clank-clank’ echoing from the tower? That’s the sound of strength. It means the spring is healthy and ready to flow today.
That sound comes from ‘Gensen-soji’—the essential task of scraping away mineral deposits (Yunohana) from the pipes. We must do this every three days, or the 100°C steam and water will clog the system. It’s a dangerous job, facing scalding heat and pressure, but as long as that sound echoes, the heart of Atagawa continues to beat.”
The springs in Atagawa are exceptionally hot and powerful. A Yumori’s job is not just maintenance; it is an art of adjustment. They read the daily temperature, the volume of the flow, and even the direction of the wind to calculate the exact timing for filling the baths. This ensures that every drop of water reaches our guests at the perfect, soul-soothing temperature. It is a level of craftsmanship that no machine can replicate.

Recognized by the World: The UNESCO Global Geopark
The Izu Peninsula is a designated UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized for its unique geological history. Within this framework, Atagawa is celebrated not just for its water, but for its “Yumori Culture.”
The tradition of managing 100°C volcanic springs using these iconic towers and sharing this energy with the entire community is a rare cultural heritage. When you soak in our baths, you are not just relaxing in hot water; you are connecting with the “Heat of the Earth” nurtured over tens of thousands of years, and the “Human Spirit” that has protected it for generations.
Soak in the Masterpiece
All six private baths at Yubana Mankai are prepared daily by our Yumori. When you feel the gentle, mineral-rich heat against your skin, remember the clanking sound of the early morning and the century-old towers standing tall in the steam. This is the authentic, raw energy of Japan.
